Prince Georges County, it seems, has only the same few major employers that it did in 1950 when I was born there.

Univ. of MD.... Joint Base Andrews.... Census Bureau.... NOAA at Suitland.... NASA Goddard.... Beltsville Agric Center

What major employers have been added there since 1950 ? I suppose, National Harbor (low-paid service jobs), PG Community College (1967), USDA at Hyattsville.... a couple of Hospitals (but, 4 other hospitals in P.G. have closed).... I really can't think of any other major employers, in all that time. Beretta Gun Factory (in Accokeek) has relocated to Tennessee.

P.G. County I will say is making some progress toward transit-oriented development (adding housing next to Metro stations, instead of just surrounding each station with huge commuter parking lots).

If you're going to break up the Federal government - then I guess you need to add IRS, NARA, DHS (Secret Service Training Center is there), etc. Aside from NARA (which built that campus while I was gong to MD in the early 90s), I don't know if these were already there. But IRS's facility at New Carrolton is massive. not to mention SAIC/BAE built an entire office next door to support the modernization contract.

As for the original question - I'm not sure you can compare two counties with a blanket answer. Sure overall, I think PG may have a higher crime rate. But it's not like the worst part of MoCO is still better than the best part of PG.

It comes down to what you are looking for. I personally grew up in MoCo... so I'm certainly going to be biased. Albeit I feel MoCo is WAY too crowded these days. Hence my going to HoCo 20 years ago.

They also lost Giant and Safeway.
