Hi everyone. I am moving from NJ to DC in Aug to go to graduate school and found a GREAT house in Columbia Heights when I was looking this weekend. I really like everything about the inside of the house, and the area didn't look sketchy to me, but I have been reading other threads and am now thinking that maybe I didn't research it enough. Can someone give me their opinion/information about the area and if I shoudl consider looking elsewhere? Thank you!
Columbia Hts is basically mostly Latino/Central American community for dc.....The only problem is MS-13 which moved in during the last 7 years and occasionally do stupid stuff but its a great area with alot of diversity and ethnic restaurants and your close to Adams Morgan and Connecticut Ave restaurants and shops........But now is a good time to get in because alot of development is taking place in that region....
Columbia Heights is definitely on the upswing. I think if you have the opportunity to move, can afford it, and have visited the community and felt safe, you should go for it. It's only going to become pricier in the coming years. At the moment, it's a decent neighborhood, but also with some really rough around the edges spots.
the area use to be considered up and coming but I would now consider that it has passed that point. Great area, vibrant, close-in, urban, metro, gorocery store (the Giant) and much more retail opening at 14th and Iriving Sts.
All of the neighborhoods in that area have made a lot of progress rather quickly, with Metro being the catalyst in most cases. The soon to be completed DC-USA retail center (Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc.) will be another major step up the ladder. The area for now remains quite diverse in both ethnic and economic terms, but if the typical recent pattern follows, that won't last for so long, as the region's ample money will seek to pair increasing amenities with short commute times and send some of the less upscale folks off to the east...
