Hi there - I'm potentially taking a job in Columbia, MD and have been thinking about moving to Silver Spring in order to be close to DC, where my friends are. I don't like the look of Silver Spring or places to live there, however, and would prefer to live in the Columbia Heights, Woodley Park or Tenleytown areas. However, would the commute from these areas to Columbia be killer? I understand rents would be a lot higher, but I would be willing to pay it to be closer to the city. Thanks!
Well, it'd be somewhere around thirty miles (pretty far) and certainly something on the order of an hour. The basic route is pretty simple...head north on 16th Street, turn right on Colesville Road and keep going until you get there. You'd be against the flow of traffic almost the whole way. I used to do the Colesville Road part heading up to Ellicott City in the morning rush hour a few times a year, and it was actually fairly easy. That came to a halt maybe six or seven years ago though, and things could have gotten worse since then. My guess would be that it's doable, but you'd have to really like living in DC in order to justify it. Of course, if you lived in Woodley Park, it might be really easy to really like living in DC. That's one of my own favorite areas, and Tenleytown isn't a whole lot behind it. Columbia Heights, of course, is different, but if you've been there, you already know that...
I live in DC near Tenley and would not commute from the city to Columbia, period. Too much time, too much stress.
I would take the Columbia/Ellicott City area and see those friends on weekends, when the traffic situation is usually better. Plus, in C/EC, you are also close to Baltimore, which has a LOT going on and a different character from DC. Definitely, Tenley and Woodley are neat areas, but I recommend them more if you have a good Metro ride to your job.
You commute will be very bad. Maybe you could take colesville RD or Rt. 1 and get lost. Well from anywhere in D.C. It's going to be a bad commute. It think it wiuld be light if you lived in Chevy Chase.
