I often miss shows, because I don't have time to check all the clubs calendars. I don't do twitter, etc. Is there one good site that has all the good shows listed?
City paper's events calendar lists a bunch of shows from up to a month out. It casts a pretty wide net, so there's a lot to sift through if you're looking for something specific. D.C. Music, Shows and Reviews - Washington City Paper
DC9 and Black Cat tend to host local and indie shows. So I would check those individual sites too. Not a single list, but they have a pretty good focus on that genre. Black Cat: Home DC9
If you have links for Richmond and Baltimore I'd love those as well.
I have another question. Is there a good spot for 80's alternative dance music (new order, etc....) and if so is it mostly a young crowd or would there be people in their (cough) late 30's there?

So people who actually grew up with the music(instead of unimaginative 20-something hipsters who've yet to come up with any truly unique musical innovation) aren't cool enough to hang at these sort of places with the likes of you?

the way i interpret that post is that the OP is in their late 30's and doesn't want to be surrounded by college kids. could be wrong, though.
anyway - rock and roll hotel and red palace are also good venues for indie shows. black cat has 80s nights.

c'mon man you're sounding like an old geezer here. "Wellllll see back in my day we had real music! not like the trashy sounds these young whipper snappers call music today". Nostalgia does wonders I tell you.

Exactly. Thank you for seeing the correct intent. I have no desire to be the only late 30's woman at a club where everyone else is 25 and under. How is 80's night at the Black Cat?
Pollstar.com doesn't seem to list some of the smaller clubs like the Velvet Lounge. Showlistdc.com has these as well as the big venues like the 930.
