Anybody know what's the big deal about Busboys & Poets? Especially in regards to opening in Anacostia?
Coming from the area, I've never been to anyone of their establishments and am trying to find out what all the hype is about?
Genuinely curious??
Ward 7 and 8 residents have almost no restaurants. The only places to eat are fast food places. When you cross the river, how many places are there to eat? People living in Ward 7 and Ward 8 have been waiting for investment for decades and it never comes. This restaurant is taking a big risk opening up in Anacostia, but if it is successful, maybe other restaurants will take a chance. Ward 7 and Ward 8 need grocery stores and other amenities that people all over the DC area take for granted. Everyone should be able to have access to basic amenities.

Yeah, definitely makes sense. Hopefully, it does become successful so that more sit down restaurants come to that part of the city and more businesses open shop.
2010-2017 DC Population (White vs. Black) Difference
Black = +19,446 people
White = +66,092 people
People seem to always come up with opinions when facts are readily available. DC is not losing black people. DC is gaining black people. DC is just gaining more white people per month than black people. We can sum this up with one phase....DC IS BOOMING!
If I build 100 buildings on empty lots and fill them with new residents, the population is going to grow. I don't understand why this concept is lost on everyone from the media to the guy on the street.

Glad you posted this. I feel like now more than ever, there's such a diverse set of black people moving to the city because of what it's becoming.
Young professionals from around the country, black folk from MD/VA, Upper income folk and immigrants/expats.

A black professional woman who likes Whole Foods and would dine at establishments like "Busboys and Poets" (the most pretentious restaurant name anyone has ever come up with fwiw) is every bit the gentrifier as her white equivalent. It's not about racial composition, it's about turning a place with an organic culture into a generic wealthy yuppie playground. And the appearance of a restaurant like this with its smug trustfundarian millennial attitude is typically the harbinger of doom for regular folks of any color.

You need to take a look at Paris, London, and Manhattan and see this is simply the direction the WORLD'S wealthiest and most important cities are headed. This is not a DC phenomenon. The District on some smaller level will demographically resemble those cities. DC is the capitol city of the wealthiest nation in world history. Gone are the days of the decrepit capitol city that no one dared to walk around downtown after 5pm. And since it's acknowledged in your post that gentrification is not actually a "racial" thing rather than socio-economic it shouldn't really upset you that much, knowing that this is what happens in the worlds wealthiest or most important cities.
Yes, it's happening in a ton of places...but how exactly does that change the fact it's bad news. There's plenty of bad trends happening on a global scale.
Though for what it's worth "Busboys and Poets" is a D.C.-specific monstrosity. They should re-name it "Non-profit development managers and visiting conference attendees".
