DC is the most powerful city in the free world! Now you tell me who won?
New York City is the greatest city in the world sans aucune doute. Although I detest New Yorkers, their city is the most electric, diverse, and exciting city in the world. Too bad I'll never be a part of it...
If you were to think of urban living as a dating experience, here's how I'd characterize the NYC/DC distinction:
Would you rather have a bodacious, babelicious Monica Bellucci (10+) in her prime or a Claire Forlani/Sanaa Lathan (7/8) in hers?
If I were thinking short-term, I'd undoubtedly go with Monica Bellucci. But I couldn't expect to hold on to her for long. The competition for her would be fierce and I'm not sure if I bring enough attributes to the table to win her loyalty and fidelity. It would be a great ride, though, and how many guys could boast of such a claim to fame? On the other hand, Claire Forlani's not smoking hot, but she's no slouch either. True, Monica's got a better body (and everything else), but Claire seems more like she's in it for the long haul. You have a realistic chance of winning this chick, not just taking her out for expensive drinks every once in a while. Life with her won't be nearly as adrenaline-rushed as it would be with Monica, but you'll be able to look forward to a life of stability with an attractive woman in Claire.

NYC, what comes to mind from my experiences: Cold, dank, over-crowded, bustling, fast-moving people with no time for anyone, transplants trying to live up to the NY stereotype, ugly brick outer burroughs, bridges, tolls, tunnels and potholes, more of the same that one can find in any decent-sized metro area, high humidity and high blood pressure.
DC, what comes to mind from my experiences: Either federal or grand in appearance or ghetto-oriented, heavily forested suburban areas, more exclusive and preserved-feeling metro area, lack of a skyline makes for a deceptive perception of the city's true size.
