We are about to move into an apartment with access to the Metro Orange Line, using the Courthouse station. Yes, I have consulted the Metro map.

Can my wife and kids travel safely, by themselves, to the Smithsonian ? How long is the ride?

Also, what pass should be purchased? I see a few options on the website. Which one is most recommended. She and I will be travelling on the Metro quite a bit, using all lines, probably every other day of the week.

Thanks

No worries, they can travel safely to Smithsonian and back. There aren't a lot of complicated fare packages, unless you are a short-term tourist or senior citizen- if you are going to live here, just get a Smarttrip card, which you can reload as it runs down. Each person over 4 will need one. Fares vary by time of day. I figure Courthouse to Smithsonian is around 15-20 minutes.

Officially, it's a 13-minute trip. Metro fares vary by both time and distance. This one would be $1.85 in rush-hour (before 9:30 am, between 3:00 and 7:00 pm, and after 2:00 am on Fri and Sat nights), and $1.35 otherwise. Metro is extremely safe, also clean, fast, and easy to use once you get used to it. <kevbros> is on the mark by me re the SmartTrip card. You're out of pocket an extra five bucks to first acquire one, but they are definitely the easiest way to get around, so if you'll be riding a lot, it will definitely be worth it...

I live in the Court House area and it's about 10-15 mins depending on exact timing of the trains and yes it is safe.

One more silly question, can a baby stroller be taken on board without people (kid haters) snickering

Yes, people take strollers on the metro all the time. It's best to take a smaller stroller - the only time I have seen people get seriously annoyed is when someone brings one of those SUV-type strollers on that takes up most of the front of the metro car. Best to avoid rush hour with a stroller too (if you can, but if you can't, just try and get on the first or last car). But no one's going to laugh or be upset.

Yes to avoiding the metro w/ a stroller during rush hour--mornings (roughly 8 to 9a.m. or 5 to 6 p.m. it's going to be packed) People won't necessarily give you looks, rather the real issue is there won't be any room for a stroller.

Yeah, making it onto a train at Courthouse with a stroller during rush hour would be tricky. You can probably manage at Rosslyn (lots of people getting off to transfer) but Courthouse will be a tight squeeze.
