I like that most of the posts in this thread are from May-August 2009... anyone remember what happened in the Winter 09-10 ? ;-)

When does the humidity typically settle in over DC, and how long does it usually stick around before it abates?

Some people downplay DC's winter, but it is a "real" winter. It isn't Georgia or some place. I am Canadian and live here, I am familiar with winter. If you come from upstate NY or Minnesota then winter in DC is relatively mild and short, but if you come from Louisiana or California it is probably like deep hibernation time lol.

DC is mild until Christmas and then it is freezing until the middle of march.
Even when it is bone cold, there are some cozy, sunny, dry days. It doesn't
snow all throughout the entire winter, just some special days. Depending on
how much snow it is, it won't even stick, but if it is a bad snowstorm after
January, the snow will stick around and fully melt everywhere until April.

I know others said this before, but THIS winter is going to be brutal.

Are you sure you want to be a weather forecaster? They don't have a good track record in this town.

The last winter really sucked here. We had stretches of days when the high temperature never got out of the 20s F thanks to the "polar vortex". Forecasters from multiple meteorological sources are predicting more polar vortices for the Eastern half of North America. Great. Wonderful.

To give an idea how last winter was such an anamoly, I wore my thick parka coat almost every day in January and February. In previous winters, I can remember only wearing the parka two or three times during the entire season from December to March.

Also, the extreme cold weather had a real damping effect on the local economy. People were not going out for dining or shopping. Fewer companies were hiring workers that involved working outdoors such as construction.

Washington, DC winters usually have high temps in the 40s and we get far more rainy days than snowy days. Not likely this coming winter.

I think the coldest I had ever seen DC get was like 0 (including windchill) in the 10 years I had been here before last winter.

Last winter, I had to walk a .5 mile to work from Metro two or three times in -10 weather. I really hope this winter isn't as bad but according to most it's going to be colder than average.
