I'm looking for a tailor not far from the Dupont/Logan neighborhoods. He/she has to be good with women's clothing. Ideally, I'd like to find someone who can not just hem pants but copy articles of clothing that I already own. I tried J.C. Lofton on a few occasions, but I'm not happy with the overall quality. Any suggestions? Particularly welcome are suggestions that won't break the bank.

Default G street fabrics?

I am not sure, specifically, about a tailor but G Street Fabrics has tons of sewing classes. You might be able to call there and and see if they have recommendations for a tailor in your area.

I've taken classes at G Street myself. I just don't have the money to invest in the right equipment, the space to set it up, or the patience to practice as much as I should.

Anyone have any personal experience with a tailor that they'd like to share? It seems like an expensive proposition to just start trying my luck with the various storefronts in DC.

I'd try contacting any really high-end shop -- from Saks on up.

In my personal, pre-Internet experience, I bought a too-long dress at Nordstrom's and their in-house seamstress hemmed it for me -- impeccably. This was a few years back but perhaps if you telephone the store, you can talk to that department directly and ask if their people take outside work.

Also, I've had both competent and incompetent tailoring done by dry cleaners. And I had one really disastrous experience, with a neighbor who claimed to be an expert ...

Or, if you try Googling seamstress DC you'll find several, with reviews (mostly from brides-to-be).
