hello all,

found some land outside of Republic up by Curlew Lake that we are wanting to build an off grid cabin and homestead and would like to get some more info before buying it.

what can y'all tell me about gardening (wife), and hunting (me) in that area...a coupla miles west of Curlew Lake

anyone have any knowledge of how good of land that is for putting in a pond?

any info about anything in that area would be greatly appreciated....thanks!!

Cool Good & Bad Aspects

I live at the foot of Sherman Pass, but I've been all over the county. Curlew gets more sunshine than the pass area, so you'll have a longer growing season - although the average season is only about 64 days. Might want to consider a greenhouse to start your crops. LOTS of areas to hunt; BLM property galore, and possibly national forest land available. Check with Dept of Fish & Wildlife for access locations. My city-block size pond is fed by a natural spring, but I don't know if you'll find that near Curlew. No restrictions on size that I know of (I worked closely w/the Planning Dept, which monitors construction projects). As for general info about the area, count on LONG winters. We had 36° morning temps just 2 weeks ago; didn't get above 70° until 4 days ago. Frost hits the middle of September; first snowfall usually happens around Halloween. Republic & Curlew get less than I do (2-3 feet). Spring NEVER arrives at my house until the 1st of May. Maybe you'll see it sooner in Curlew! This area is borderline wilderness: VERY few amenities, very few "extracurricular" activities (no bowling alley, no movie theater, no roller skating rink, no golf course). But Omak and Colville have the big stores, and both are only about an hour away. Tourism hasn't replaced the economic downturn created by the lumber company closure or the downsizing of the mine, but the scenery & natural beauty of the area is drawing more people every year. If you're retired, this is a great place to live (barring health issues - the community struggles to keep the Republic hospital & Curlew clinic open). If you're still working for a living, then go somewhere else. After 10 years working for the county, I got laid off due to budget cuts. I'm still trying to find a job after 3 years of searching. This is NOT the place to pursue a career unless you choose one that doesn't depend on the local economy to succeed. Good luck!
