I was wondering if it is legal to have a Capuchin Monkey as a pet in Pierce County? I know exotic animals are banned in the city of Tacoma and Puyallup, but are they banned overall in Washington?

Chimpanzees are specifically noted as illegal. Other monkeys are not mentioned in the county code. I would check with the city where you are or will move to. The sate does not forbid them, but counties and cities can have their own regulations. Some may be allowed but only by permit, and require minimum cage sizes, or other regulations and even inspections.

The law specifically bans private citizens from owning primates, which would include all monkeys, in the state of Washington.

OK, I have to know...why in the world would you want a monkey as a pet?? Why not a nice pygmy goat or a rabbit? Monkeys actually do not make good pets, they are wild animals. I actually knew someone in school, many, many years ago who had a pet monkey, it was very unhappy. It threw its poop at everyone.

Yes, further research showed that the law was passed in 2007. The reason people still have monkeys is that they were grandfathered in until their current monkeys die.

Why do you want a monkey? They are foul-tempered, they stink, they bite, and they can't be house trained so you have to change their diapers every day of their entire life.
