My wife had a job interview in tacoma today. She drove over to Gig Harbor after the interview and fell in love with the area. She said that she had to pay a $6 toll though.

Is there some sort of discount if you commute from Gig Harbor to Tacoma every single day or do you just have to suck it up and pay? Is there another way across or another option? Paying hundreds of dollars every single month for the toll bridge isn't something that we've considered.

The only discount is if you have a Good to Go tag it will cost you $5.00.

There is no other way around unless you want to swim.

Other than the no cost long swim in cold water the other is a long drive south through Olympia and up through the Key Peninsula, it'd be more than $5 in gas.

I grew up in Gig Harbor and mom still has a house there, it's a beautiful area. Every new GF I took there always wanted to live there too. That said, if that 2nd bridge that added the toll wasn't built, I guarantee your wife wouldn't have bothered with the drive, it was a backed up mess for years.

Have her look through N. Tacoma/Stadium district in Tacoma.

It's still free going the other way, so she only has to pay going to work, not coming home. With the ferries and more tolled bridges and freeway hot lanes now, and our high gas tax, it costs a lot to commute. Still more than offset by the lack of state income tax, but they have to make it up somehow. My employer subsidizes the bus pass so I use it and have a free commute.

Last Saturday, Halloween, I drove over the bridges on a visit to Tacoma. It happened to be 75 years to the day after Gertie galloped into the water there. In other local news, a new rainfall record was set for Oct. 31. Quite a historic day, I'd say. Glad I could be there!

Depending on where she works, you could ask the company to pay your bridge toll for commuting to work. I had a friend where his employer was reimbursing him, but that was because they moved him to a gig harbor store involuntarily. I doubt they would go for it, but thats the only way you get around it.

Or wait another 30 years to where the bridge is paid off and it goes away...

I posted on your other thread in the Seattle forum also... I would plan 2 hours for such a commute. It won't always be that slow... sometimes a hundred thousand people hit the road in front of you in the morning, and no one crashes.

Sometimes....

2 hours is a good rule of thumb, you can cut 15 minutes from it on the Southside, add 15-30 if Ballard or further North.

You might be able to commute via vanpool:

Current Vanpools > Pierce Transit
