Washington State's general issue plate has been mostly unchanged since 1987, with only the Centennial cursive State name changed to block letters in the mid-90's. So 30+ years of basically the same design. Time for something new?

If you don't like the general issue, you can choose from 40+ special plates. Here is a list of the top 10 favorites:

Washington's most popular specialty license plates

I really like the State Park plate, and one that didn't make the top10, the Lighthouse plate that can be seen here:

Washington Lighthouses - About Plates

What special plates do you prefer, if any. And do you think it is time for a new general issue plate?

The Evergreen State could use an Evergreen plate.

I have had the Engendered Wildlife plate (EW with an Orca on the plate) for about six years and recently when I purchased a new auto the plate was transferred to my new car...Used to be any plate could be transferred but now only specialized plates can be transferred from old to newer cars. I asked the dealer why and he said the state was losing money the old way.

We have the state parks license plates for both of our trucks. Because the state legislature decided that parks needed to be on their own for funding, we try to help however we can. Besides, they are prettier.

I like the Orca best. Wasn't there supposed to be a Sasquatch plate that benefited state parks? Was that just a story?

Yeah, I find it ironic that the current and longtime WA state general issue says "Evergreen State", but there is no green on it. A simple fix would be to change the color of the state name and the "Evergreen" slogan to green, creating a green and blue plate. But I think the State could be more imaginative than that.

My daughter, when she was four, asked why Washington is called the Evergreen State when it is always brown.

I think it might be time for a slogan that represents the entire state instead of the small swatch of land west of the Cascades.

I would like a license plate that says "Sun and Sage State".

"Nuke the Whales" would be an interesting specialty plate to expound on WA State history and resources.

Despite the lack of change over the years, I still think we have one of the most attractive plates. In most cases you can't see "Evergreen State" anyway, it's covered up by the bottom of the license plate frame.
