My husband and I (we are gay) are looking to retire in a few years and have narrowed our search to Olympia, for several reasons. My question ... are there gay neighborhoods, or gay friendly neighborhoods, that we can buy a home and feel welcome?

Wspoter,

I believe you will feel welcome living anywhere in Olympia. Olympia is a very open and accepting town.

A gay neighborhood? I've never heard of such a thing.

Over here in this part of town, this is where the gay people live......
Down the street is where you'll find straight people, this neighborhood is for bisexuals.

As you head east to west, from Lacy to Olympia, the hippie/counterculture vibe increases until you get to West Olympia, which seems to be the place that the majority of younger gays chose to live. But, as others have said, all of Olympia is gay friendly. In fact, the whole tri-city are of Lacey, Olympia, and Tumwater is. You will be welcome here.

No big deal. Love is love. You'll like Olympia, though to really go native you should start calling it "Oly".

Heh. Yeah, my first reaction to the thread title was "I suggest you try anywhere in the Olympia area." When being gay just is not a big deal, gay neighborhoods aren't needed. I wouldn't expect really small towns around the periphery to be quite as accepting, but you aren't proposing to move into those. And even if you did, this is the Northwest. What kind of person you show yourself to be factors a lot more than does your sexual preference--and that was somewhat true even in rural towns before gay marriage became legal.

The bad news is that there's no longer a cool cachet to being gay. My best friend, who is a wiseacre, said during the gay marriage progress: "It's kind of a bummer. Used to be something sort of hip, and now it's like, 'oh, you're gay, whatever, big deal.'"

I kind of laugh when someone posts on the Portland forum about seeking a gay-friendly area. I can only imagine what sort of places they must be coming from. I'm trying to figure out where our gay-unfriendly area might be. Not sure you could find one even as far out as Scappoose, Estacada, Corbett, Gaston, etc.
