We got a little chillier at 23 degrees this morning. The fields and yard are white with frost and all the outdoor water frozen solid. Fortunately the hummingbirds have a heated feeder so they were happy about that.

It's the first frost I've seen this fall in Vancouver getting down to 32 this morning. It's warmed up to the 50s now and sunny out.

They had the big witches paddle this morning in Portland with hundreds of them out on the water today. WA has a number of them as well this weekend including the one from Vashion Island today. This is apparently a big event this time of year in the PNW.

As always, Vashon is set to celebrate Halloween in high style

These witches don't let a little cold stop them.

Another hard frost (the landscape is white) last night and sunshine this morning. Winter clothes weather with gloves, hat and coat. The leaves are dead on the perennials. The sunshine and moon rise have been beautiful and days crisp. This gives those who like crisp cold weather a break from the gray.

We had a beautiful weekend of sun and mild fall conditions in Vancouver. It got into the mid 50s both days after starting with morning frost. I'm still in shorts soaking in the sun while we have it. Gotta seize the day! Here's a few pics from a family walk today.

Beautiful chilly crisp nights with white frost, a full moon, Jupiter and stars in the sky. It was in the 20s over the weekend at night but this morning it was warmer at 30. Still gorgeous with the crunchy frost and clear skies. It warms up nicely into the 40s-low 50s with the warm sun shining.

This will soon be a memory when the gray skies return.

Yeah it looks like today will be the last sunny day for a bit, so I'm mowing the yard and hoping this will be the last time until Spring. Optimistic? Sure. Realistic? Who knows.

It's traditional to mow the lawn in waders on Christmas day. That's a joke but not far from the truth. If it warms up again, you'll probably have to mow. We spent the weekend catching up on yard work before the rain, too.

I have to mow and seed our lawn today.
It is getting chilly at dawn but I heard it was warming up.

I ok with the chilly weather and the drizzle it’s the short days and the reversed tides that get to me.
Reversed tides don’t sound like much but I really enjoy foraging low tides during the day.

The winter tides can be a bummer around the Sound. I like walking the beach and beachcombing too, and it's a disappointment to walk a mile to a beach and find no beach. I always forget to check the tide tables because in summer there's always some beach available, even at high tide.

Today I awoke to one of the most beautiful sunrises of the year followed by an unseasonably warm, sunny day. It reached the 60s today in Vancouver. I decided to make of the most of all this sun and get out on the Columbia river before our next storm. Here's sunrise to sunset on this last day of October.
