I'm looking at a car I want in Portland. I'm not trying to dodge paying taxes. I know I'll pay them when I register the title. Are there any legalities that I should look for in buying a car out of state? Can there be any problems not picked up on a carfax? Any input appreciated.

Do you know this model of car well enough to do your own "technical inspection"? Do you know what a "good one" is like?

Are you financing the car, or paying cash?

Offhand if the current owner has a valid and unencumbered title, signs that over to you, there are no problems buying a car out of state and then registering it when you get it here.

There used to be a required WSP physical inspection of every 'out of state' car brought to WA for reg. This currently ONLY applies to branded titles and kit cars(AFAIK). I have not had to have a car inspected lately, but I have had to inspect trailers (as OR has different license / ID requirements than OR) also commercial vehicles need registered weight verified by WA DOT.

OR emissions is not adequate, so you will need a WA test, unless vehicle is exempt. (Too new, too old, or living in emission exempt area)
