Both are horrific. Out of the two I want to vote for Newman for the fact it doesn't get quite as hot in the summer, but I also want to vote for Phoenix because it has potential get colder there in the winter. Tough choice. (Went with Phoenix in the end).

Actually, I'd think that Phoenix is less arid... Newman has a wet and dry season, where the rain falls mainly during the season with excessive heat. Much of that rain is probably already evaporated before it even hits the ground... In Phoenix, rainfall is much more evenly distributed through the year, May and June are virtually dry... Looking at these figures, although Phoenix gets less rain, I'd think that much more of that rain actually makes it into the soil and into the roots of plants (cactii...)
Since the climates are just about identical – the physical locations themselves comes into play;
Newman, Australia is a basically a tiny cow town in the middle of nowhere – Perth the closest major city is almost 800 miles away - lol. I have no idea what there is to do in Newman, Australia - but something tells me that those hot summer afternoons in a cow town of 4,000 people… might be a little boring.
On the other hand…Phoenix, AZ is a major city of 1 million people – with world class restaurants, shopping, professional sports, museums, etc. I would think there would always be something fun to do in/around metro Phoenix. Also, fun cities like Las Vegas, Yuma, Tucson…ect are not far.
I hate southern hemispheres opposite season so Phoenix
