I thought this time of year you were heading into the warm season? The high sun season is Nov - March where you are (May to September here). I would think the sun is starting to get strong by this point where you are.

Warm season my ass. 18-20C highs in the forecast here as far as the eye can see, with NO thunderstorms.... and what's more, Sydney and coastal NSW are just as pathetic with 20-22C highs with showers everyday even as far north as Coffs Harbour.
Temps 5-10C below average throughout Vic and NSW in the 7 day forecast. Just continuing the theme of this cold and cloudy and record stormless year.

The sun is really starting to get some heat now. Lunch and tea breaks have been under a tree for the last couple of weeks now. The UV index in the most northern parts of the country was around 11 yesterday, but only 9 here.
The water is getting warm enough for swimming, with the beach at 20C/68F yesterday afternoon, and the river at 19C/66F the day before.
Hmm, probably Wanaka (or elsewhere in Central Otago) is the best option. Being the least maritime climate in the country (farthest from any coast) it tends to be the most consistently warm (in relative terms). Plus, this region is the driest in the country (almost semi-arid in parts) and has very light winds -- this makes, say, 15 C there feel much warmer than it would here when you have a brisk easterly wind coming off the frigid sea.

68F certainly doesn't sound frigid to me. Our water would not reach 68f until mid to late June. Having those temps of surf in mid May here would be very nice.

18 - 20 C highs (65 - 69 F) for May would not be so bad if there is sunshine, though I admit that's too cool for me as well. The top of of Aussie/and New Zealand seem to be under the cool marine control much more than points north into Australia.
It's amazing how quick that the warmth increases as one moves furthur down the cast to Queensland this time of year. I would guess that Brisbane has highs of about 26 C by now.
