Im in 34 latitude and 60s and 70s are fairly normal in June. There are probably more places around that range in where 60s and 70s happen often in winter.
Los Angeles for example (and 80s too i would guess).

I was just trying to analize how uncommon were the 70s for NY and compared to the much warmer climate i live, and the result was that 20c in NY were as uncommon as 30c in BA in comparable month. So pretty uncommon i would guess.

Pretty accurate. Temps over 60F in December happen just about every year, but 70F not nearly as often.

I was really only trying to include locations in temperate latitudes....so BA is of course not a temperate climate.

However, your correct - many other loctaions near 34 latitude have daily highs in the 3 winter months in the 60's and 70's. Here in the states a place near 34 latitude (Charleston, Dallas, TX, Phoenix, Los Angeles...etc)....of course see many winter days in the 60's and 70''s.

I was just trying to gauge of common it was in the middle latitudes for 60's and 70's in the heart of winter. Based on the comments above it is less common than I thought it was.

Somewhat more common in DC: 3.7 days / year.

There's nothing nefarious about it - I got it from The Weather Channel. At the time I looked at the 10-day forecast NYC had a forecast high of 38F for December 8 (now it's been updated to 40F). Plus, forecast sources differ - NWS has 64F and TWC has 60F (it was 59F back when I posted).

I note how our resident cold spinner conveniently only goes back 12 years – hmmm? Somthing is not quite right
Nothing nefarious about that, either. The Weather Underground page on Central Park only goes back to 2000, so I thank you for getting more data. As for being a cold spinner, that's an unfair characterization. I call it as I see it, and I doubt that a cold spinner would have taken as much pleasure in deriding the mildness of NYC winters as I have in multiple threads (including this one). By my reckoning NYC doesn't have much of a winter at all, but 70F in December is somewhat rare.

I may also say that the timeframe of 13 years, only going back to the warm late 1990's, is equally convenient for a warm spinner . Why 13 instead of 12 or 15 or 40 or any other timeframe? I don't think you are a warm spinner, but I'm just pointing it out. Obviously the best measure of the long-term chances of 70+ in December would be to use the entire temperature record.

If someone here wishes to do that they're welcome to do so - when it comes to data, the more the merrier. I myself would much rather check up on temperatures in Scandinavia and the Yukon before I go to bed.

Very uncommon.

Aside from showing NYC only hitting 60s/70s a couple times in the last 310 December days(10yrs) ... Here are the December daily records for NYC.. Only 7 different days in December in the past 142yrs have they gotten to 70+. After the 11th it has never gone above mid 60s.

Sure... still warm as hell, but very rare that even 142 years of records it never has reached upper 60s after the 11th(except for the 29th). The 8th through the 14th hasnt broken the record in decades.

Its Rare to have more than 2 days of 60s or 1 day of 70s in NYC in december.

As I mentioned earlier the quickest way to get lots of data is to use the climate summary page here:

SOD USA Climate Archive State Selection Map

go to custom monthly listing

COOP Monthly Data (3200) list Form

select Max Temperature under Select Element, Number of Days under Select Statistic. I typed start year 1971 and end year 2011 to avoid accusations of cherrypicking. Under options click greater than and type 69 (or 59):

I got 0.17 days / year of 70s in December. 0.06 for the entire record. For any other place in the US, this site can be used to answer the OP's question. Also a useful site for looking days of precipitation or snow.

50s for sure... But Like someone pointed out.. 60s happen every December in NYC, but not more than a couple times. So you are correct... its not worthy.

As my comment stated... "Its Rare to have more than 2 days of 60s or 1 day of 70s in NYC in december"

And a comment like this....

"another day?".. that waves a red flag. Today was first day in the 60s (not past 60)in NYC and tomorow will be the last day.

If you lived in a true winter climate you'd not get upto 50f nevermind 60f. IMO new York does not have a winter at all.
