As some of you may or may not now, the movie plays out a theme of global warming and rapidly melting ice caps causing an ice age by shutting down the Gulf Stream.
I watched this movie the other night then the next day heard in the news about how ice caps were melting faster than expected. Then I started thinking about the movie's scenario and wondered if it was possible for something of this magnitude to actually happen?
One great shot was how a human froze solid in a few seconds in cold air. Even if you threw someone in a vat of liquid nitrogen, he wouldn't freeze that fast.
Is a "The Day After Tomorrow" scenario of global warming causing an ice age realistic?
Yes. But not to the extent of what they show which is mostly for entertainment. For instance the eyewall causing a rapid decrease in temps where gas lines freeze. However, the general scope is completely accurate. When you get cold waters into the Warm conveyor belt of the ocean, it will disrupt weather and cause extremes.
On a related note...I've seen upper air temps CRASH with hurricanes and storms..... so having temps go from 0C to -20C is not out of the question.
And on a similar note.. if one is looking for signs of an ice age, its not going to happen when you wake up in the morning like floods turn to Ice and 30 feet of snow. Its gradual. Look for increased snow amounts in storms. Look for snow that falls in summers. Look for upper level temps that dont warm up fast. And watch the snow pack on the mountains. You wont get an Ice berg floating over night so it will start with snow depth increases in the mountains first.

Snow burying London to the height of Big Ben in a couple of hours is NOT remotely 'realistic' - Science Fiction, yes, with 'Fiction' being the operative word.
