Portsmouth is good to go Sailing in Spring and Summer and windsurfing (particularly in Autumn). But Pompey is sh*t for proper serf! Like Irlinit said, Cornwall is more well known for surfing, Devan and Dorset are pretty good places as well. I think Portsmouth is bad for surfing because its a nice (sarcasm) Stoney beach and it's protected by the Isle of Wight, that's just an educated guess though.
If you want to go surfing in the UK you may want a wet suite as the sea here is cold... I bet even if the UK had 40 degrees weather the sea temps will be still freezing!
Na think Australia or California are the best for the surf sport! Windsurfing is very good for the UK though, if you don't mind cold and wet then winter may be a good time to windsurf?
I know Devon and Cornwall are well regarded for surfing, as well as parts of Scotland and Ireland.
I see Portsmouth is blocked from the open sea, but was wondering about the ocean side of the Isle of Wight. Quite by chance, the Isle of Wight yacht race featured on the excellent TV series "Coast", not long after I posted my first question - looked very nice. Stoney beaches aren't a problem for surf, just lack of waves.
Australia is a 1st tier surfing location, along with Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa, Hawaii. California is more of a 2nd tier one, along with places like NZ, Japan, Portugal, UK etc. Still plenty of great breaks in California, but the cold water was a big shock the first time. At the comparable time of the year, I found it didn't feel warmer than Invercargill waves.
I have the misfortune to live in the lamest part of NZ for waves -nothing unless there's major activity off the Queensland/NSW coast, but it does have good quality when it does happen. I've become an avid surf skier since moving back up here, as there is plenty of sea breeze chop to play in. One thing I miss about Invercargill, is surf. There are few days without some swell down south.

Brilliant post... I think NZ is defo a place to surf, hence one of the reasons I want to life there. What are the best coast(s) to surf at in NZ?
Saying that, Bournemouth (UK, believe it or not!) is defo a place to visit as it has everything! Great night outs, perfect Spring and Summers (a few people I know from the med told me Bournemouth is the perfect city!), and the best city beach in Britain!:
