or average monthly high of 68 F/20 C (coolest 1-in-10 January)

If I read that right, then there's probably very few parts of North America that can compare in "summer variability" to Melbourne.
If I had to guess, Toronto's July 1-in-10 hottest/coolest averages for example would probably be something like 85F/29 C and 75 F/24 C.

I think parts of the Southern California coast could have close to the variability that Melbourne has in summer temps especially when the Santa Ana winds blow in. San Diego's average high in summer is the same as Melbourne's (and being 5 degrees closer to the equator in its respective hemisphere) and their record high is 44C which isn't far behind Melbourne's record high...

Yes, Melbourne's climate is not that extreme no matter how you want to look at it. It's nowhere near the cloudiest, coldest, warmest or wettest climate out there. It's pretty much average in virtually all those categories.
SAB should spend a winter here in Vancouver and I promise he will never complain about Melbourne's cloudy skies ever again.

When people who are not from the Pacific Northwest say it is the worst climate it makes me laugh. What in the world is so wrong with the PNW? I have lived in Northern Idaho most of my life and now we are living in Northern Oregon on the Coast.

Before coming here all we heard from all the 'experts' aka friends was that is rained all day everyday blah blah blah. Well they are 100% wrong. It rains enough to keep everything green and beautiful and no arid, dry 110 degree heat all day everyday. That would be far worse than rain twice a week. A lot of the time it would rain after dark anyway. That is the best in the summer to have a nice rain overnight and have daytime temps in the mid 80's.

I will say the statistic saying that Seattle's highest temperature being 96 is WRONG. This last summer we got up to 103 - which is a a temp I NEVER EVER IMAGINED we'd hit here in Seattle.

Ken
They're called "Decile 1" and "Decile 9" stats, according to BOM.
I know they aren't the records, since Melbourne has had highs of 115 F and 55 F in summer months.

You're mountains are probably bigger that block out more desert heat.
Deserts probably not as hot as Victoria's either.

Just about every year when the Australian Open (tennis) is on, everyone is complaining about the heat, and players are getting heat stroke.
Have a look at last January (2009) :
Melbourne, Vic - January 2009 - Daily Weather Observations (http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/200901/html/IDCJDW3050.200901.shtml - broken link)
Pretty impressive, three days in a row above 40 degrees Celsius, and 4 for the month.
Not bad for this much-maligned climate of Melbourne.
They then set the record of 46.4 degrees Celsius on February 7th, the hottest day ever in an Australian capital city, beating Perth's 46.2 degrees set in 1991.
See: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/200902/html/IDCJDW3050.200902.shtml (broken link)
SAB - surely you remember this?

I remember reading and maybe posting about the heat because of the news coverage. I try not to get irritated but geesh people that have temp variances so small all year but carry on about cold and damp weather amaze me. People that live where temps change by at least 100 degrees all year (90 in summer, below zero in winter) have a reason to complain.

The ocean coastal weather patterns (or in my case being blocks from the Great Lakes) are what they are, you are not going to have endless sunny days period, can't happen!

You definitely can have a climate that is TOO continental where summers are too hot and winters too cold to the point where you are not enjoying either. But some like it that way - hot, sweaty summers and cold snowy winters.

I think some city in the midwest would be a better candidate for such an experiment. Not only that, it would be closer to Melbourne's latitude.

That was a freak event. Last time it got that hot was in 1939.

Look at the rest of Feb 2009...summer took a catastrophic collapse right after that 46C day. Also look at December 2008.....call that summer, I don't

Sydney certainly is the worst place to be right now - very little rain and boring sunny stable weather, no thanks to that awful El Nino pattern! Darwin in the NT recorded over 360mm of rain from Thursday.

ok. Ohio is HORRIBLE!!! Lets go month by month.
January: CoLd As F***. Not only is it cold, but the wind makes it 10 times worse. You need a coat, 6 shirts, 5 pairs of undies, 4 pairs of pants, 8 pairs of socks, 3 pairs of gloves, two scarves, 3 hats, and a snow suit to keep the wind from making your skin hurt. But then you get the random 65 degree day, followed by 6 inches of snow the next day.

February: Hell literally freezing over. Right now, there are 50,000 people without power in Canton alone. Why? Because almost the whole state is encased in a 2 inch shell of ice. You can't go to work because you can't get your car open because it's turned into a 2 ton block of frozen water.I am listening to the tree outside my house crack as I hope my power isn't next to go out. All of that with a wind chill of - 20 degrees. And it's RAINING. And that is all in one day. The rest of the days we get 3 feet of snow dumped on us.

March Still ccoolldd: Honestly, the cold here sometimes doesn't end till the middle of May. But this month it can't decide if it wants to rain or snow.

April: Flooded. I think there might be 2 days without heavy rain. Kids will try to swim in the street. Did I mention it could be 15 below one day, then 80 degrees the next?

May: The rumbles start. I HATE thunderstorms. The ones that give us tornados will be starting to get more frequent now.

June: Humid with a chance of Run for your lives. I swear we must be a lightning rod in June. And if you have ever been to ohio in June, I'm pretty sure you thought your clothes were shrink wrap the way they were sticking to you.

July: Wasn't it just raining? Half the street can be sunny and pleasant, but cross the street and you are in a hail storm. The weather will change that quickly. You can be swimming one minute, and reaching for your blanket the next.

August: HOT!!! 90 degrees is the norm. And 90% humidity makes it 10 times worse. There are days that you can't breathe outside because you feel like you are drowning. This is the month where you will be wishing to move to Alaska.

September: This is actually my favorite month. It's when it starts to cool down (70-60 is normal now) and the storms die down. The humidity is still pretty bad, but more tolerable.

October: Didn't winter JUST end? We can actually start getting snow now. When the kids go trick or treating, you can't see most of the costumes, because they are all wearing heavy winter coats. 8 weeks ago they were running around with squirt guns!

November: Is it over yet? The wind can sometimes carry you away. The city starts to panic because they didn't stalk up enough salt for the winter.....again. Oh, and, like, EVERYONE is sick.

December: That's messed up... The one month you WANT it to snow, and it barely does. It's cold and all. It's just dry. Except that one year when it was 80 degrees on Christmas Eve. .........

My point is, Ohio weather is worst because it is ALWAYS changing. Once you think you are prepared, it does a 180!!!

^^ Um, the weather is "always changing" in pretty much any state in the U.S. Ohio does not have a patent on that. There are places with much more extreme weather than Ohio like South Dakota, North Dakota, etc. Pretty much any plains states or prairie province in Canada.
