So I have 1 question... why did TWC decide to bold these words? Don't be a sucker for scams! If the only things you hear and see is about warming, you should be smart and see the red flag.

No doubt about it, 2014 has been one of the coldest years in the US for quite a while. I wonder if you have to go back to the 80's to have a year similar?
For Philly from 1900-present, yearly annual means move above and below from year to year, except two long periods stick out as being below every single year.
Those periods are from 1960-1970, and from 1976 to 1989. Anyone have any idea why those two periods were so consistently below average? No wonder the averages for the 1961-1980 stick out as being below all the other 30 year periods. Something strange was going on that 30 year period.
I'm also curious if the 30 year averages in Europe underwent a similar drop during that period, or has Europe just been getting consistently warmer decade after decade?

don't know about europe as a whole, but the 1961-1990 period was distinctly cold in sweden. particular the 60s, mid 70s to early 80s and mid 80s.

I doubt that far back. Wasnt 2013 or 2009 similar? I think from Jan to October in U.S, before 2008 you have to go back to 1997 to find a cooler period.
November #s should be in a few days but dont worry, they will find a warm headline to post.

I don't have a graph to show like the Swedish one, but yes, the 1960s were the coldest decade of the 20th century in England and the 80s had long runs of cold winters up to 1987 and cool summers up to 1988.
It seems to have been 1989 when the real warming trend started - that year and 1990 are still in the top ten warmest of all time, even after being displaced by more recent years. Apart from 1949 all of the top 12 warmest years in 350+ years of records have been from 1989 onwards, and we will probably have a new number one when this year is over.

1951-1980 and 1961-1990 were slightly colder than 1921-1950, 1931-1960 and 1941-1970.

From January to October it has been above average. The cold was only in parts of the US.
November data not included but it's only one month. This year has been included in how out of synce the country has been — parts unusually hot, parts unsually cold.

No. It's been below normal. You're using a graphic based on rankings again... or could be November drove us down more.
Here's the U.S actual departures from normal for the year. Most is below to near normal. I really hate how they use -2 to 0 as a color. They should have -1 / +1 separated. But obviously NOT above normal.
