I very highly recommend
Meteorology Today by C. Donald Ahrens. Amazon has a 9th edition for $7.81, (incl shipping, Used - Good). Any old edition is fine. They are basically the same. Only diff is better graphics with later editions. I used this text for thirteen years when I taught the subject at my local community college. I found it to be the most logical layout for presenting the subject matter. Not saying that other texts are bad, this one just worked for me better than the others. There are three or four other oft used texts out there.
Ahrens is a "process oriented" text that does a good job in explaining the hows and whys of the meteorological process. Best to go from front to back without skipping chapters because they build upon each other, in order. Really try to understand the graphics, in depth and fully. That's the key to getting a firm grasp on a very complex discipline.
