Aside from Trump it's most probably because Mexico is the only "poor" country directly bordering the United States

Because a lot of Americans think all Hispanic people are Mexican.

Last year or two, more of those crossing the border were probably Central American than Mexican. Mexico is 1/3 as wealthy as the US. El Salvador is 1/3 as wealthy as Mexico...

Well yeah but in most cases people are usually right about nationality. There is definitely a general American look and culture.

Some groups absorb it and others do not.

Huh? Americans (going by born) here can be of any color. That's makes no sense at all. Why looks have anything to do with it?
