Well, because Chicago is 700 miles from the coast, it's not exactly Eastern.

If you want to be conservative, just subtract 200 hours from US numbers and this gives you a good comparison. Keep in mind I'm in the less sunny areas of the US.
I thought everyone on here knew that US sunshine hours were recorded on different equipment,
with a different threshold. Yes, to compare them to sunshine hours in other countries just subtract
about 200 hours from the US numbers for a decent comparison.

Anyway, I voted USA, they have Miami, Key West, and Burlington, Vermont,
all better than eastern Europe.

The OP specifically said "eastern half", not necessarily just Eastern (Seaboard).

Besides, the 100th meridian is where the great plains begin.

Yeah, that's your opinion. When I think of Eastern United States, I think of New York, Florida, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida etc.. Not Indiana, Alabama, oklahoma etc.

Considering the U.S. is 3,000 miles wide, 700 miles from the East Coast would still be clearly closer to East than West, therefore it's Eastern.

Denver is more than 700 miles from the Pacific (actually close to 1,000 miles) and nobody every doubts how "western" it is.

People on here are either extremely ignorant on geography or are purposely trying to have a narrow definition of what "Eastern US" entails.

Oklahoma isn't Eastern half. And the thread isn't "What does Owen think the Eastern U.S. is". Lommaren clearly said "Eastern HALF". For you to think Alabama isn't Eastern is quite stupid and shows your ignorance.

700 miles is a 2 hour flight. The weather over on the Atlantic will have and does continue to have a limited affect on Chicago.

Chicago is a Midwestern city.

Well, the Canadian poster said East of 100W which includes Oklahoma.

The 100W meridian defines the western-limit from which weather patterns associated with the Atlantic (which the Gulf is an extension of) are able to penetrate. Therefore, it should serve as the dividing line.

I don't feel that strongly about where the line is drawn to be honest, just that a clear line should be drawn so we know what climates are included and excluded.

However, the OP did specifically say the eastern half. Just eyeballing it, this does seem to correspond to the 100th meridian.
