Example: spending the warmer half of the year in Flagstaff and the colder half in Phoenix, to maintain average daily highs mostly in the 20s C year-round, requiring only a 2-hour drive. Many similar examples exist wherever hot climates exist near high altitude regions (see hill stations).
For the purpose of this thread, I'll define "nearby" as being within a 6-hour drive.

If I could find a really cheap condo with an ocean view I might like to spend January, February and March on Sunset Beach which is between two and three hours away. Otherwise I wouldn't want our yard to become an eye sore so we might have to go home on the weekend to take care of that. I find it better to stay where we are and drive to the beach for a day any time we want to and have the time. We are about three hours from the mountains too.
I would miss having three and one half seasons. Our winters are more like the fall and spring in other areas. I love snow and really get excited when we get some which isn't often.
Summers here are more than OK. Winters need some tweaking as they're too cold for my liking. So I choose Freiburg, Germany in the summer and Genoa, Italy in the winter.
Port Macquarie in winter (for having springlike winters).
