That being said, I think it's stupid as all hell when people are surprised by cold and snow on December 15 and hot weather on June 15 as if it's totally rare for it to happen on those days. "Omg it's still spring/fall and it's already hot/cold" or the people who are surprised by the same annual snowfalls in March/April or November each year. You know who I mean. The types that live in Minnesota and act like a March or November snowfall there is so shocking.
I'm always laughing when people in highly continental climates are shocked by a December snowfall when December is colder than February on average and the second coldest month of the year. Or the types that it's hot in June/July and say "you think this is hot? Wait until August" when the temperatures occurring would be very hot by August standards as well.
For here:
Mar 1 mean=16.7°C
Mar 21 mean=19.4°C
Jun 1 mean=30.3°C
Jun 21 mean=34.2°C
Sep 1 mean=33.6°C
Sep 23 mean=30.9°C
Dec 1 mean=15.3°C
Dec 21 mean=12.5°C
So for here, the metrological seasons work best for winter and Spring, while it seems that summer works best as a mix of astronomical and metrological, leaving a less than 3 month fall. I think that is what tends to happen in more southerly locations with less marine moderation.
Jun 10 to September 11 seems to work out as perfect for summer here, with the normal mean at 32.0°C both days
Autumn starts here by late March/early April. Right now conditions still feels like late winter. But in some years, summer weather occur in the beginning of September even.
P.S. I have a love/hate relationship with astronomical seasons. Sometimes I think the idea is justified and at others I find it pathetic. For Sydney, I'd say spring starts September 1st. With summer, since it feels longer, I'd say March 21st is more appropriate as the beginning of autumn. The early days of March are usually hot and humid. Hardly autumn-like.
I prefer September 23rd. September 1 doesn't make any sense, what criteria are used, other than cultural ones based on the Gregorian Calendar? I think we should separate the year in weeks to understand better, not months.
