(Inside Science) -- "The central fact is that, after three quarters of a century of extraordinarily mild conditions, the Earth seems to be cooling down. Meteorologists disagree about the cause and extent of the cooling trend, as well as over its specific impact on local weather conditions. But they are almost unanimous in the view that the trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century." – Newsweek: April 28, 1975

That's an excerpt from a story I wrote about climate science that appeared almost 40 years ago. Titled "The Cooling World," it was remarkably popular; in fact it might be the only decades-old magazine story about science ever carried onto the set of a late-night TV talk show. Now, as the author of that story, after decades of scientific advances, let me say this: while the hypotheses described in that original story seemed right at the time, climate scientists now know that they were seriously incomplete. Our climate is warming -- not cooling, as the original story suggested.

Anyone who is old enough already knows. And anyone actually open minded and interested can find out.

The time of the "coming Ice Age", as well as the worldwide MWP and the LIA are not mysteries. But if you only listen to political nonsense and alarmists, you might think none of those real things actually are real.

The cherry blossom data posted earlier in the thread actually shows the LIA and the MWP, both of which alarmists have tried to say did not happen.

If the terms LIA and MWP are mysterious to you, you are in a thread way over your head. If you don't know about "the Coming Ice Age", you are also ignorant and too young to remember it. Then there is the Altithermal (Holocene climactic optimum) which is also a real thing, when our planet was much warmer than it is now. Around 6000 years ago. Sea levels were higher, and there was much less ice, especially in Greenland and high mountain glaciers.

Alarmists are good at ignoring these things. which is why they are so alarmed.

World renowned climatologist (in his own mind) al gore tries to claim the bomb cyclone is what "we" expected to see from climate change, but he gets caught out by a real climatologist.
Fat clown.

Sad.
Yes, along with Gore's latest drivel.

Al Gore is an idiot. IMO, people like him, who are making money off this with their constant alarm is part of the problem. Just like it is utter BS to say the fact it is cold the last week in the US (funny, it was warm everywhere else), somehow disproves climate change/AGW, whatever you want to call it, it’s equally irresponsible and so far not based on facts to claim that every heat wave or severe meteorological event proves it. Maybe it will be probably linked at some point but not yet. Climate does not equal meteorology, period. When people raise the alarm on stuff like this it makes it more difficult to convince people of the real threat.

However, the evidence says, climate wise, the threat IS real. We should do all we can to combat it. Not try to make beleive that coal is coming back to give “good jobs” to people. To pretend otherwise is folly, ignorant of the facts in front of your face and risking the lives of future generations.

And yes, the Earth was way warmer in the past, from natural phenomena. But you know what, humans were not here then! So, somehow saying that makes it all OK is crazy, if you care about humans. Now, if you just care about the pile of rock and metal we currently live on, it will be just fine even if all the crops we depend on are burnt to a cinder. Humans and everything we built will be dust and contribute to the soil that’s no longer habitable. Heck, we may just be lucky in that all of human history has occurred in a narrow temperature band that may not be the norm for the planet, geologically speaking. Again, let’s compare the two sides. One side could be right, we actually do something and we reverse or slow the rising temperatures long enough that humans are OK. If we are wrong, the air is cleaner. The other side could be right and we are dead no matter what, but if wrong, they screwed it all up when something could be done.

Just read that the most common killer in many nations is caused by pollution. So whether or not climate change is naturally cyclical, man-caused, or a mixture of the two, is moot (in my mind).

Can we all just agree that cleaning up the air we breathe would benefit all of us? And a way to do that is to use technology that already exists to wean us away from burning dirty fossil fuels?

I'm a Baby Boomer and when I was born, there were 2 billion humans on the earth. Today, there are 7.6 billion of us. That's whole bunch of humans contributing to dirty air. The U.S. contributes the most pollution of any nation our size due to our large lifestyle footprints (home sizes, number of gas-burning cars driven, etc.) and energy consumption.

I think Mother Earth has asthma and is having trouble breathing...
