Ahhhhh, the 'Dry Season"..... after 7 months of debilitating heat and humidity, DP's never below 24c day and night, rain every other day etc... ( well for us coastal Top Enders leastways ), we get into the first of the 'Dry Season' months.
Its a huge change in our weather patterns; gets as much media publicity as the begining of the 'build up' does, or indeed, the arrival of the 'monsoon'...
May can be 'tricky' climatically in the Top End.... its either feast or famine re rainfall, sometimes the 'Wet' lingers on into May, and we sometimes get good late rains.... not this year, but.... a grand total of zero at the Airport gauge ( and zero in my backyard gauge as well )
Temps are the same... max and mins can vary substantially year to year... +35c temps can and do happen in May and not a single min below 20c.... but this year ( 2023 ) started off well above average for both max and mins, but really cooled down in the second half of the month. In fact we recorded 14 sub 20c mins for the month, and the lowest min of 16.7c was the coolest for May since 2011.
A feature of the second half of May right across the Top End has been the cold mins ( down as low as 11c-12c in the Darwin Rural areas ) and very low DP's.... many sub 10c's and as low as sub 5c's even in Darwin coastal suburbs.
Alice Springs has experienced a colder than average May.... the sub zero mins on the 9th and 10th of May were the earliest on record at the Airport ( dating back to 1941 ) and the May mins anomaly is -4.5c from the norm ! Max anomaly is -1.6c.
Rainfall in the Alice was only 1.2mm ( monthly mean - 17.9mm )
Several monthly min records were set over the Eastern side of the Territory... Ngukurr with 7.3c and Borroloola with 5.3c !
Rabbit Flat out in the Tanami Desert also equalled their coldest May min temp of 1.2c.
No idea whats happening over the north eastern corner at Gove... the AWS has been down for the whole month....

Darwin, Northern Territory:
Rainfall - 0.0mm ( long term mean 20.4mm- median 4.omm ) Highest daily fall - 0.0mm
Max temps - 32.2c av ( long term mean 32.1c ) Highest max - 34.8c on the 6th. Lowest max - 29.2c on the 21st
Min temps - 20.7c av ( long term mean 22.2c ) Highest min - 25.4c on the 1st. Lowest min - 16.7c on the 29th and 30th

Alice Springs, Northern Territory:
Rainfall - 1.4mm falling on 2 days ( long term mean 17.9mm ) Highest daily fall - 0.8mm on the 16th
Max temps - 21.6c av ( long term mean 23.2c ) Highest max - 27.0c on the 25th. Lowest max - 16.9c on the 27th.
Min temps - 3.7c av ( long term mean 8.2c ) Highest min - 12.2c on the 15th. Lowest min -0.8c on the 9th

May 2023, Buenos Aires, central station.
(1991-2020 normals)

Mean: 16,2°C (+1.4°C) 7th warmest on record
Avg. min: 12,3°C (+1.2°C)
Avg. max: 20,5°C (+1.1°C)
Pp: 166.6 mm (+73.1 mm)
Days with rain: 8 (+1)

What a contrast with that berzerk March, right? still, month after month above average, and this autumn ended as the warmest on record as it was dead obvious. The change was that with the end of La Niña we're finally getting back to normal levels in terms of humidity and rainfall after years of unprecedent droughness in recent times.

From the official Corvallis, Oregon weather station at Hyslop field:

Ave Max 72.5 (22.5); +5.5 (3.05)
Ave Min 45.6 (7.55); +1.3 (0.72)
Rainfall 0.44 (11.2mm) -1.91 (48.5mm)

It was an unusually warm and dry month. Warmest since 1997 and driest since 2008. Given the abominably cold and wet late winter and early spring, this was a welcome change. We hit 92 degrees for a top temperature on the 15th and a return to winter for the first ten days of the month kept us off the record books.
What of June and the rest of the summer? The Climate prediction center has us looking at a slightly warmer than average June and rainfall about standard. "They" (those anonymous plural forecasters) believe the Pacific Northwest will see a summer with temperatures a bit above average and conditions encouraging drought.
