December was garbage. Worse than garbage.

Days above 30C / 86F ......... 3
Days above 25C / 77F ......... 8. Absolute disgrace

Days below 20C / 68F .......... 8.

Average high was a pathetic 23C / 73C, while the average low was an equally pathetic 13C / 55F.

Stunned with disgust Infact, this January is faring even WORSE!!!! For the first 10 days this month, we've had 2 days, 2 days above 25C /77F. Only TWO!! The average highs and lows are running even colder than for December

I can write a fairly interesting summary for December 2008:

Dec. 1 - 12th San Antonio, Texas

Warm beginning to the month with highs in the 80s under clear skies with a steady extension to ongoing drought. The 2nd week of the month, a strong cold front with overrunning moisture provided a few hours of sleet mixed in with a rare snowfall in the overnight hours. This system then moved further east bringing snows to Houston and New Orleans.

Dec. 13th - 20th Willis, Michigan

Transition from the general warmth of South-Central Texas to the bitter cold of Southeastern Michigan in December. Temperatures in the teens greeted me at the airport, with no looking back. During my time there we had several inches of snow accumulate on the ground in a matter of a couple of days. Low temperatures bottomed out in the single digits.

Dec. 21st - 30th Clermont, Florida

Another shock for the body, leaving the Michigan cold for the Florida warmth. High temperatures were relatively constant in the upper 70s/low 80s throughout my stay in Florida. It certainly felt much better being able to step outside without freezing. Even had the opportunity to swim outdoors

Dec 31st Willis, Michigan

One last visit to Michigan through Jan 6th with bitter cold, but much less now. Thankfully my stay in the Great Lakes was nowhere near as cold as is projected throughout the next couple of days.

And yes, I'm back in San Antonio now.

I was in Duluth, the whole time, unfortunately.

The month averaged 7.0° F, which happens to also be 7.0° below normal, the coldest December since 2000. Except for the 2nd, all of the first twelve days of the month were below average, with high temperatures mostly in the teens and lows primarily in the single digits above and below zero. Our first sub-zero low of the season was on the 6th, -4; the next day we had our first sub -10 low of -11. Moderate snow fell on several of the first twelve days, bringing the mostly barren ground of the first few days to about 5" by the 13th.

The 13th and 14th both had warmer high temperatures in the upper 20's. On the 14th we had our first decent-sized snowstorm of the season, with 8.8 inches of snow falling at the Duluth International Airport according to NWS statistics (this is all according to Airport statistics on the NWS website, which are closest to those experienced at my house).

Right after the balmy 29° on the 14th temperatures plunged, with a high of -5° and low of -18° on the 15th, and a high of -2° and low of -22° (F!) on the on the 16th. At the time there were warnings of slippery roadways, not due to snow, but because at such low temperatures car exhaust can freeze and make for road troubles! Windchills were also extreme during this period, probably often below -40° F and perhaps even falling to -50° F in some areas.

After more than 48 consecutive hours of sub-zero temperatures, temperatures rose, but a snowstorm ensued. 7.3" of snow fell on the 19th and 6.8" on the 20th, for a two-day total of 14.1". Temperatures for the period between the 17th and Christmas generally remained below average, with highs in the positive single digits and teens (peaking at 19° on Christmas and the snowy 19th), and lows mostly below 0, ranging from -19° on the 18th to an anomalous 14° on the 19th.

Some respite was had the two days after Christmas, which had well above-average highs of 32° and 35° and lows of 19° and 16°. High temperatures fell again at the end of the month to the single digits with a low of -8° on the 30th and -16° on the 31st.
