I'd just like to know where in the world it's the first day of Winter?

It's the 21st of June here in Australia and our shortest day or Winter Solstice but as far as I'm aware Winter starts on 1st of June for countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a country who counts today, 21st June, as the first day of Winter.

I realize that in the Northern Hemisphere (tomorrow) 21st June is the longest day or Summer Solstice AND the first day of Summer but I'm struggling to find a country here in the Southern Hemisphere where the exact opposite applies.

It just seems odd to me that google has their logo graphics all covered in snow today and have given the reason first day of winter.

Anybody? I'm mystified.

Very pretty and completely unrealistic! Well in terms of the Southern Hemisphere anyway.

In the United States, it is commonly understood that winter starts at the winter solstice, summer at the summer solstice, spring and fall at their respective equinoxes. It is kind of stupid if you ask me. If anything, winter solstice should mark middle of winter.

In Eastern Europe where I'm from, winter was from Dec 1 to Feb 28th, and summer from June 1 to Aug 31 (obviously backwards for Aussies ) It is still arbitrary but at least this method seems to better reflect the coldest and warmest quarters of the year for most places.

I agree, it's cold enough to feel like winter here at the end of April.

True, early September here is when the first signs of spring start to occur.
