Maybe $500. I think my dress 16 years ago was $400, and it was off the rack on clearance. It seems like there are more options now for pretty dresses that aren't thousands of dollars.
It also depends greatly on the level of formality of your wedding, obviously. One of my good friends was married in a very relaxed, outdoor summer ceremony. Groom wore a brown tweed suit, she wore a simple white silk spaghetti strap shift from J. Crew that cost under $100. She did buy a veil, though, which was more costly than the dress. It's cool, because every year on their anniversary, they go out for a romantic dinner, and she busts out the dress, with different accessories. It's their tradition. It's a simple enough dress that it works for that.
Mine was well over the 3K mark and that was 8+ years ago.
I didn't set out looking for an expensive dress. I had gone to one store and tried on a bunch of gowns that were well under 1K, then my sister booked an appointment for me at some high end bridal salon. She walked by a grouping of gowns, found a dress she thought I would like and that would flatter me, I tried it on and the rest is history. The irony is that the dress was mistakenly placed in the mother-of-the-bride section because it was light pink/champagne in color with copper beading. Love my dress!!!! I need to make an excuse to wear it again, although it would need some major alterations at this point.
