This came to mind when a high school friend posted her wedding photos from 20 years ago and the first thought that popped into my head was "oh my god! those dresses are old country drapes!". I have Aspergers (only recently diagnosed at age 44) and so I don't really have any friends. Because of this, we agreed to keep our wedding party very small. My brother-in-law was my best man and my wife's sister was her maid of honor. Only others serving in the wedding were three 6 year old girls and one 5 year old boy and her father (who was in his 80s and was able to walk down the aisle). Instead of telling her sister "what" to wear, my wife told her sister what colors to wear and the sister picked a tasteful dress of those colors. Because of this, the sister now had a nice dress she could continue to wear for other occasions.
Something that is considered ugly now may have been quite fashionable at the time. Or it could have been ugly, because some believe the bride is the only woman that is supposed to look good that day.
It's much easier to have only one attendant and have that person choose a colour and style that is flattering to their body type, than trying to pick one dress to fit several different women of different height, weight, shape, hair colouring and skin tone.
Op, my sister in law was a bridezilla (and my brother groomzilla)but this is the one thing she did right. She told us the color to wear (royal blue)and the basic style (sleeveless and long)and after that we got to choose. I still have the dress and it's been used for formal dinners. I'll do this when I marry.

One reason why I like this idea is different height and body types look different if all wear the same exact style.
@GMvictim: Can you please give us some pictures of bridesmaids dresses which you consider to be ugly?
I won't post a copy of the friend's wedding photo. However, I did find this site which may help. I'll link the site here and then search through the site to see if I can spot the dresses that most closely matches her bridesmaids dresses. Ugly Dress.com - Bridesmaid Dresses From Hell
My first thought is always that they want to make damned sure that none of the bridesmaids look better than they do.
