The ring goes back to the person who bought it. End of story.
WRONG It is a gift. Person receiving it gets to keep it, as it is a gift.
My fiancee / then husband / always said "if you leave me I get the ring and the kids" he said it in a very threatening way
When it happened, yes i left him 12 years and 3 kids later, the kids where shared custody, and the ring was mine. Even the attorney said it is a gift it is mine.
I tried to pawn it because I did not want it, highest bid was $75 (for a $9,000 ring) so I gave it to one of my sons instead.
Now granted, the post asked about prior to the wedding, but still...isn't a gift a gift?

The ring is obviously yours (the ex-wife to be). This thread was more concerned about what happens to the engagement ring when the wedding is called off. Too bad you got such a low-ball offer on the ring.
Right now, my fiance has only got a promise ring from me. Back in the summer, I tried to buy her an engagement ring, and she said she was happy with just the ring she has. It is a pretty nice little ring, I think. But, if she were to call things off, I wouldn't make anything out of the ring situation. As far as I would be concerned, she could keep the ring. I wouldn't really view it as any different from all the other jewelry I've bought her this last four years. To me, gifts are gifts, regardless of all other factors.
He MAILED me a diamond ring, came to visit, picked up his kids, took them to Texas where he lives. Declared us ENGAGED.. He came back here to take his kids home, stayed with me over the 4th of July weekend.... and then returned to TEXAS. He broke up with via TEXT message and less than a week later MARRIED the girl he was cheating on me with.
I had the ring appraised. It is worth more than I thought. WHO keeps the ring. He owes me a lot of money, and I don't think he deserves the ring back. What is the law in Nebraska????
Ive always understood that the ring(s) go back to the person who bought it if 'she' is the one who breaks off the engagement/marriage. But if 'he' breaks it off, in all fairness, she keeps it if she so chooses to. Same applies if the woman bought the ring(set).
I'm going to say it depends. If she broke off the engagement, it should go back. If he broke off the engagement and she has invested her own money into the marriage that now will not happen, I think she has the right to keep it to recoup some of her losses, unless it's a family heirloom then it should be returned no matter what.
Speaking of engagement rings. My little brother being the idiot he can be decided to throw his ex fiancee's $6000 ring in the lake when she broke off the engagement. I'm really miffed. I would have taken it off his hands
