How much did or would you spend on an engagement ring? Would you subscribe to the industry's propaganda about 3 months salary? How would you feel about someone who insisted on an expensive ($10k+) ring? Would it be a dealbreaker for you if someone placed a huge importance on the value of the ring that you give them? I would imagine that a woman who truly loved you would be happy no matter what you gave them - even if it was a cheap cubic zirc ring...

If she's the type that wants to show off a big stone.....run, don't walk!!!

Three months salary???? Good grief!! Let's hope that the marriage doesn't use the size of the engagement ring as a guide.

Three months salary is a guide. What else are you going to pay exorbitantly for? How else will married monies be spent? Sorry, it is not reasonable. I paid 3.5 K in 1998, money I did not have. I regretted it as it was a preview to the future. Many persons in the past had used smaller, less expensive rings, and as prosperity was gained, added to the same.

And here I thought we were in a recession/depression...

I haven't really thought about it. But if I were to insist on a gigantic diamond (beyond the means of my fiance), I'd probably chip in.

(I value the design of the ring more than the sheer size, an ugly ring would be ugly no matter how shiny it is)

I don't want an engagement ring, and I only want a very simply wedding band. Preferably something weird, original and slightly nerdy

My wife did not want and engagement ring, big waste of money in her opinion.

If she was the sort who wanted a big Rock, I would be running away - very fast.
