If one is in what is supposed to be a pretty safe area though who knows anymore what are thoughts on gated or not especially around condos and apts. It seems FL is very popular for gated but I am curious on others views.

well we never lived in a gated community before, my development is gated with 24 hour guards on both sides...honestly I happen to love that about where we live....we were subjected to a very close home break in where we lived before moving to florida, and we do prefer being gated...

Gated. Its a pain and restrictive and ends up with a false sense of security - dont think that being in a gated community is going to insulate you - but its a deterrent - a very minute one - but one nonetheless.

It's a bit of a deterrent. It does keep out door to door solicitors, and people just driving around looking for targets of opportunity.

I think the gated, oxymoronically named "community", mindset has
damaged Florida.

I am in gated now but it had a guard too. I never saw the need but now seem to be noticing on tv all the missing people in FL. I think as I have been looking around for me it is going to depend on the place. Regardless of gate or not safety of the area is important to me. I know all areas even good have there crimes though. Thanks was just curious on views of others

I live in a gated condo building (the Edge in West Palm) and the past two weeks we have had like 12 cars had stuff stolen from them, including my own. The cars were unlocked so whoever it is isn't breaking into them, but it is a locked, has cameras, and is secured garage.
Gates really aren't a complete deterrent by any means. If your in a safer area I wouldn't base my decision on that.
I am so glad I'm moving out of this dump on Monday!

Where does a realtor move ?? North PB ? South ?? Shoreline ???

Best wishes

My Wife called 911 from her car at the gate of a
'community' that gets mentioned here a lot (upscale)
because she saw the little guard kid at the gate being beaten.
When the police arrived it turned out the person trying to
get in was not allowed in the 'community' for some reason
and the person inside became upset at this and decided
to drive to the gate and beat the little kid up for not letting
him in. A very unsettling and disturbing sight for my Wife.

That not good!
We just got bank approval back on a short sale on a townhome in Boynton by Renaissance Commons. Amazingly it only took 30 days. No kids yet, so don't need anything larger. Looking forward to home ownership again!

I prefer un-gated. I like older neighborhoods or "new urbanism".... both of which eschew gates.

Though if I was super wealthy I think it would be cool to have a house with big gate with my initials on it, flanked by columns with something tacky, like big eagles or a lion, lol.
