My husband and I are looking to move to Morgan County, WV, to be half way between our grandkids in New Jersey and Roanoke, VA. It seems that most of the homes for sale in the county are part of an HOA (Homeowner's Association), complete with rules & regulations, association fees, etc.
We had lived in one senior development in NJ with an HOA, and really do not want to live under someone else's rules. We own a travel trailer and small boat, and it seems most HOA's don't allow them on your own property unless housed in a garage. Even our small travel trailer would require a huge garage! We don't golf, and don't want or need a clubhouse, pool, etc. for which we would have to pay fees.

Are HOA's an integral part of the West Virginia housing scene? Are there any areas without HOA's?

Maybe in developments. Most homes are not in developments hence no HOA.

Thanks for the info. It seemed that most of the homes I've looked at online always mentioned "see agent for info on association fee". It could be that they were all in developments. Only a few said "unrestricted" or no HOA.

Could this just be a CYA for advertising's sake?

Default Richmond - Chesterfield - Virginia area

My husband and I have been browsing the web for homes in the Richmond - Chesterfield VA area. I also am finding several homes with HOAs. We would like to stay away from that extra expense.

Is anyone familiar with this area? Are HOAs common in this area? Is there a reason there are so many "developed" neighborhoods?

Thanks for your help.

I would ask in the VA forum, specifically the richmond one.

A poster here might know, but you would get much better advice there.
