No it's not as depressing as "common knowledge" says. The same as rural areas aren't like those shown in Deliverance, which is where many people get their information about small towns and rural areas. Well, there and Norman Rockwell.

No more than this is what all cities are like:

I thought the OP was referring to the fact that not all of WV is as depressing as movies like Deliverance much like not every single inner city is as depressing as inner Baltimore?

Funny that if you search "Best small town in WV" Fayetteville and Summersville pops up all the time (along with Lewisburg, Elkins, Thomas, Cass (mainly for the railroad) and of course Harper's Ferry and Shepherdstown). As you said, though, being tourist hubs next to New River Gorge NP definitely helps the local economy.

Living in Maryland I'm most familiar with Harper's Ferry and Shepherdstown as they're literally just across the Potomac from MD...and definitely nice pleasant towns. Of course, always help that you're 1.5 hrs away from central DC and Baltimore (and less than that for those in the affluent western suburbs of both cities).

worst part of WV personally? the fact that the best ride in the state - Cass to bald knob is like darn near $70 a head. @#$@#$-ers!

Worst part of WV actually? the pay and bennies for civil servants is among the worst...especially teachers. WV finds itself on 3 sides surrounded by VA, MD and PA, all a decent commute who pay 30-40% more with bennies. The bennies WERE ok, but in 2016 took a nose dive. I took a WV teacher home 9 years ago into pa and she never looked back.

FWIW I will be in the eastern panhandle the next 2 days, trying to decide where to eat...wonder if Las Trancas is still there?

PS guarantee you I fished parts of the Greenbrier no one has seen...used to sneak across the fed land for the scoops all marked off to get to this island about 10miles or so from bartow...

There is a local authentic Mexican restaurant close the Holiday Inn and Fairfield Inn that I highly recommend.
