Cost of living here is among the lowest in the nation. Huntington was actually rated as having the lowest cost of living in a recent ranking. As far as the economy here goes, it's not as robust as other areas but because of this, we don't see the sharp changes when downturns happen nation wide. Where are you considering a move to?

As with any area, it also depends on what kind of job you are looking for.

It will REALLY depend on your specialty, you will either find a job easily in WV (usually in the health care or service sector related field) or you won't find one at all. You mentioned things being a little rough in Vermont, well WV is certainly not known as a place one moves to find a booming economy. I have friends with masters degrees that left the state because they couldnt find any jobs whose salaries weren't a direct slap in their face. When people in business related fields holding graduate degrees can't even find starting jobs over 30K then you know something is wrong.

One thing people DO move to WV for is its scenic beauty and slower pace of life. The cost of living is VERY VERY low, especially compared to anywhere in the northeast. If you really want out of Vermont and can find suitable employment in WV then I say more power to you...you just might want to come down first and take a peak though. Good luck!

And this state has regional industries...everything from apple orchards to radio telescopes...better give it a very hard look...and in a year with Obama in power, the state could be dying again..coal is its blood and the dems say its dirty and it smells...without coal, we have NO taxes...no Tax surplus...and no Economy!

Only a few people really work in Wv...about 700,000...the remainder are old, young or getting Degrees (an employment escape certificate good in other states..)

With the effect gasoline costs are having on each families income, something will have to give...if the coal industry is killed off for good and we lose those jobs...we will possibly see the last great and final migration to DC and Charlotte...

Morgantown was rated the #6 small town in the US for business and careers by Forbes Magazine for 2008. It's the 4th year in a row they have been top 10.
LINK

The 2007 Top Boomtowns list by Inc. Magazine had Morgantown #7 OVERALL in the country (They haven't done an '08 list yet). The methodology used relies heavily on job growth.
Link

The 2006 "Smartest Places to Live" list by Kiplinger listed Morgantown as #29 overall in the nation. (last "Smartest" list was in '06)
Link

And there are many more appearances by the town on several other lists, too. These are just the economic/career lists from the last two years. If cost of living is a concern, you could live in Fairmont (cheap) and make the 20-25 minute commute up I-79.

there is virtually no economy in wv outside of healthcare and low end retail jobs. So, if you're not in the healthcare field, you'll likely be quite disappointed.
