Depends on what you like. Some would say Shepherdstown, others Fairmont, and the others mentioned. Personally, I think Shepherdstown has the most "character".
I'd have to agree with those listed above. I've visited several for differing reasons, and when there for a short time most of the small college towns seemed very similar. When visiting as a high school student for state science fairs or camps my perception was quite differnt than when at another college town as a fraternity member to watch a football game, or as an adult for a vacation.
But having grown up in Jefferson county, attended Shepherd College {University} and now living just outside of town, I'll have to vote for Shepherdstown. I'm sure it's similar in the other towns, but it just seems to be such a unique location. The mix of types of people is kind of strange. We may have more of a variety than the more central WV colleges becuase of the high percentage of out of state students and the location which is more MD/VA than WV.
Sheparstown reminded me of a cool yankee little town when I went to visit. Seemed artsy and old fashioned. I ate at some pizza place on the main drag, and I felt like I was in a time warp. Very cool atmosphere for a college.
I have no idea. The structure was at least 100 years old, had original wood flooring, and I believe a staircase leading to a basement. I honestly felt like I was in a restaurant in Deadwood (awesome HBO series).
