My family and I are relocating from TX to to the Westchester area. I will be working in Purchase and my husband will be commuting into NYC. We have a young child so school quality will eventually be a consideration. We have decent incomes but don't like the keep up with the jones mentality as we tend to be fairly low key people. We'd like to spend between $700-$900K on a house. So given all of that, any recos on where to live? I have read through all of the threads on these boards and am thoroughly confused!!! Any help would be appreciated.
For a more low-key environment, I would look to Harrison, Mamaroneck, and perhaps Pleasantville if you didn't mind a slightly longer commute. Valhalla might also be a consideration as it has a good school district and is not a high-pressure environment.
What sort of a neighborhood/town/village do you seek? Does your husband commute to Midtown or Lower Manhattan? If Lower, you might not want to go too far north, as that commute can get long transferring from Metro-North to the subway.

In case you are unfamiliar with the local geography
chipgirl, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography, I've sent you an explanation of the very, very confusing geography of New York as a DM (Direct Message).
who knew the local geography was so confusing? thanks for your help. we're looking for reasonable commutes b/c we both work long hours and don't want to be away from our baby any more than necessary. he will be commuting to midtown, westside. good schools will eventually be a must. we would also like a somewhat small town feel with lots of friendly neighbors and a great family atmosphere. the block we currently live on in dallas has 24 kids under the age of 18 and everyone hangs out in their front yards after work socializing, drinking wine, and watching the kids play. it's fantastic.
