I currently live in Brooklyn and work in New Rochelle (which I'm now realizing is the most inaccessable part of Westchester).

I want to move my family to the suburbs and we are looking in Rockland County (New City).

My question is, what can I expect commuting from New City to New Rochelle over the Tappan Zee? What are the worst times to go over the bridge, and how are the highways in and out of the area?

I'm originally from NJ so I don't really know these routes at all.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me sound advice!

Between 7 and 9 coming and 4-7 going it's rough. Try it first. Expect at least an hour.

Why in the world do you want to do this vs. living in a decent area of Westchester? I understand you are from NJ, but you need to commute more than you will see your extended family, in most instances.

Because to send my kids to a good school in a good area, will cost me more than I can afford. Westchester is NOT cheap.

Which is why many families choose Rockland over Westcheser. Like the above poster said give it an hour. It's definitely durable.

The worst traffic you will experience will be on Fridays evenings during the summer after 3pm to around 8pm.

Not sure what you consider affordable, but for an hour plus commute, why not consider a place like Cortland or Fairfield, CT (and just take the train)?

It's the bridge that is the problem. Not the distance so much.

It's not fun, but it's doable. Get youself E-Z Pass so you don't have to stop. If possible, try it a couple times during rush hours and see what you think before you make the big move and find out you can't stand it.

Yikes, I think you'd be crazy to do this. Crossing the Tappan Zee, getting through White Plains, down the 287, then onto the 95??????? Crazy.

Hope for the new bridge with train link! At this rate, it may be built sometime this century.

Maybe you can look in Danbury/Carmel area? I am not sure how the schools are (although farther north in New Milford I know they are pretty good), It's way cheaper than Westchester, if you are by Danbury, you are on a small train branch where you can get to New Rochelle by getting on in Danbury and transferring in Stamford, and if you drive, there are options compared to be forced to take the Tappan Zee- not to mention no tolls
