Richrf, I was following your posts about your research on where to settle down. I am just curious if you and your wife have chosen a winner?
Unfortunately not. Our Fall trip was derailed by Sandy and now we have to re-calibrate the affect Sandy is having on the overall rental market in White Plains/Hartsdale and Stamford. My preference is for White Plains because it provides more options insofar as seeing family and having family visit. However, Stamford seems to have more apartment availability. COL seems to be about the same. In any case, we now will have to plan another trip (maybe winter time to see how they compare during the winter months). I'll post something if we come to any conclusions.
Good luck to you on your search. If renting, you can move if you really don't like a place after a year or two. I recently purchased a condo in White Plains. Currently living in Manhattan, I am really tired of the insanely high rent and the lack of space, finally decided to move. I compared a lot of choices and think White Plains is the best for me as I work in Manhattan and I don't want a car. Downtown White Plains is walkable and very convenient.
Not having a car is really going to limit your suburban life. It is bizarre to think of someone stuck in "City Center" area of White Plains as their entire existence. Please let us know how many months you last without a car. Unless you're a porn and Xbox junkie who never leaves the apt except for work.

Thanks for the info. Can I ask which condo complex you chose to buy into? Thanks for any additional info.

I work in NYC everyday so I get my city drill after work if I want to. Agree with you on the car (besides the time spent on porn and Xbox), I do need a car at some point - maybe sooner than I thought. Do you know any good running trails/routes near WP?
ZipCar has come to White Plains, addressing the problem of those who want to work in NYC, AND live in downtown WP without owning a car. Whenever you want to leave town, you can just pick up a Zip Car at the WP train station.

Its at the center of the Hudson Valley bus network so you can go anywhere in the region if your not afraid to use the buses...
College educated professionals don't use buses in suburbia.
I have also seen ZipCars at the City Center parking garage.
