My wife, toddler daughter and I are currently in Brooklyn, and are definitely looking to move to Westchester in the next few years, before Kindergarten starts. I grew up in Bronxville, but that isn't an option for a few reasons. Top two considerations are schools and manageable commute (I don't work near GCT, so need to factor that in the door-to-door equation). After that, we would prefer somewhere with a great sense of community, good parks and rec options, and decent dining. The two leading contenders are Pelham and Hastings, with maybe Eastchester and Tuckahoe in the mix, albeit lower on the list.
Here are my thoughts on the pros/cons -- any others? Please let me know. And any other suggestions are welcome!
Hastings
Pros: Excellent schools, reasonable commute, good parks, picturesque, money seems to go a *tad* farther than Pelham, taxes aren't bananas by Westchester standards.
Cons: Dining options are limited, unused waterfront warehouses, very hilly (could get old quickly if walking to/from the train).
Pelham
Pros: Excellent schools, slightly better commute, good dining and shopping options (Fairway!).
Cons: Taxes seem high for what is offered, lack of parks, houses appear to be a bit pricier comparable towns (exclude Bronxville, Scarsdale, Chappaqua, of course).
The other town I can think of that might meet your needs would be Pleasantville. A longer commute than the other two, but a good mix of other things you are looking for. That said, there is definitely a very strong sense of community in Pelham and a good deal of walkability that makes up for the lack of public parks (though your perception on that front is correct.)
Thank you! Pleasantville sounds nice, but I don't think the commute would work, in part because (at least with my current job) I am looking at 25-30 minutes on the subway *after* arriving at GCT.
Don't sleep on Fleetwood (nicer part of Mount Vernon, next to Bronxville)
Taxes are substantially lower than other lower Westchester town.
You are 3-10 minutes from Pelham, Eastchester, Tuckahoe, etc
