Hi, considering a role in Tarrytown. Have 2 small kids, so looking for good schools. Budget is maxed around 500k. Is there anything in a commutable distance?
An hour, with that budget, you will have a ton of options. You could be in any number of great school districts in NJ, NY or CT. You will get more house outside of Westchester. Literally dozens of places meet your criteria.
If that were my budget and one hour is a reasonable commute for me, I'd look north to the Yorktown Heights area. You can get more house for the money, fewer property taxes, no bridges to deal with, and good schools.

Agreed, 500,000 max will get you next to nothing in any good school district south of 287. Lakeland SD, Yorktown SD, and Somers SD are good options.
Also look at SE Rockland (South Orangetown and Pearl River - Nyack if you like a more artsy, urban, walking town feel). Yes, the TZ Bridge will have to be crossed, but the milage is very small (closer than northern westchester) and with the new bridge traffic will not be bad - its not really that bad now anyway. 500k will make you more or less average there, and being average in great school districts is a good plan. You don't want to ever be the poorest or richest in town. If you are all looking at a bridge crossing you must test it out at the exact time/day you will commuting - both directions. Remember the tolls though. Monthly EZ Pass bill is nothing to sneeze at.
I work in Somers. It has a very good school district, and it's a nice, friendly community. It would take you about 40-45 minutes to drive to Tarrytown max. I also think Somers is in your price range particularly because it's further north and is a more difficult commute to Manhattan.
Your options are endless within an hour commute to Tarrytown. Since I'm not sure of your situation, (i.e.: 2 parents leaving for work by XAM) watch out for school districts like Pleasantville (which I LOVE) but doesn't have bus services. Obviously, do your home work were things of that nature come into play. Good LUCK!
