This probably excludes poorer towns in the county

So their mortgage calculator is inaccurate. I did a mortgage if 600K at 3.25 rate and it gives me $1600 over 360 months lol. Anyway, does this calculator include food?) I’m puzzled how someone above thinks enrichment classes is luxury. When there are 2 working parents u have no choice sometimes. I did my numbers and turned out 12K with one car, both commuting, no cleaning lady or gym. And here I thought our close to half a mil salary was good lol

Mortgage, property taxes, and childcare are exorbitantly expensive in Westchester. These are the primary drivers of the $10k figure that is quoted in the article, and there's really no getting around any of them.

I suppose you could move to a town with a lesser school district, but realtively speaking, your taxes are still going to be much higher than the national average. It's not a very compelling trade.

This is obvious but the only reason anyone lives in Westchester is for commuting convenience and economic/job opportunities. Outside of that, the overall quality of life is not great, at least in my opinion.

To me, enrichment classes are paid activities people enroll their kids in like piano lessons, gymnastics, foreign language tutoring, figure skating, sports, horseback riding, whatever it may be. Not the same as after-school childcare which is a necessity for many.

These types of activities are often extremely expensive and not - strictly speaking - necessary or available to people who don't have a lot of discretionary income to spend on them. Hence why I call them luxuries.

As a kid I wanted to take figure skating lessons, but it was $100/hr for ice time plus another $50/hr for the instructor. Massively expensive and a luxury activity most middle-income families just couldn't afford. I'm assuming it costs way more than that in Westchester, and that's only 1 'enrichment' activity! Yikes.
