We are moving from NYC to Westchester. 3 young kids, one (age 4) has mild speech.language issues, one (age 7) has mainly attention issues, has aide currently or won't focus at all or complete tasks, no diagnosis, also gross/fine motor issues. All 3 bright, I think. Great schools.net always has people saying something in every district about how the school is only good for brightest, self motivated students. This scares me. Have ruled Scarsdale out for this reason and likely inability to "compete" financially. Considering Bronxville, Edgmont, Ardsley (but I think their special ed is more autism related?), Briarcliff Manor. Most grateful for any thoughts.
Ardsley Special Ed is not just for autism. They have an excellent program for autistic kids but that is not all they do. A friend of mine has 3 kids - 1 is severely autistic (can't speak, runs around in circles), the other one has ADHD (typical symptoms - extremely bright but can't focus and has behavior issues) and the 3rd just needs a little extra help (Nothing formally diagnosed). She moved to Ardsley as it was the only school that worked for all 3.
See the link below for Ardsley Special Ed programs. They have a Committee on Special Education that identifies children in grades K-12 with special education needs such as learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, physical disabilities, emotional disturbance, mental retardation, etc and based on the evaluation, they can tailor a program that best fits. I encourage you to call the School District and talk to the Special Ed Directors of all 3 schools to see which is the best fit. Good Luck

Try New Rochelle Schools. They have a full continum of services and a very strong program for speech and language. If you want the children to have inclusion general education services they have co-teaching in all the schools. One of only a handful of Districts to be certified by ASHA (American Speech and Hearing Association) - its a gold star. Call Yvette Goorevitch the Director, she will meet with you and review the children's IEPs to discuss supports. Very strong SEPTA - excellent parent support. Good luck
14 y/o with autisim and asbergers in yonkers school system, HELP
Yonkers is not the place for anyone with limited financial resources attempting to educate their special needs child. Does anyone else agree? I have been advocating for alternative placement for this child since he was in kindergarten, and denied every year at the CSE meeting. The school board considered his IQ much to high and his reading level was always three grades above average. Now in the 8th grade they have made him repeat the year. Now they have recognized he may need special classes... Thanks Yonkers...
