Winters near Asheville - overcast and dreary for months, or is there sunshine?
We moved from up North where winters = having three different snow shovels and when working, hire guys with a snow plow for what got piled up in front of our house.
We have dreary days, perhaps several straight. My partner has seasonal xxx disorder and gets fairly affected. It does't phase me. But the north is exponentially worse.
Moved here a bit over four years ago. Got hit with a snow storm that took down many counties in the area. It was an anomaly for here but was like NY to a degree. Asheville doesn't have the equipment the North does. But since that time, there has been little snow and it clears up very quickly. We're in what used to be a rainforest. The sun is more intense (even in the winter) and, yes, we go from freezing (a few mornings ago @8 a.m., it was 17 degrees) to we were out riding our motorcycles yesterday and could've been easily doing that today. It's 2/8 and there are buds on the trees and greenery coming up from the ground.
Your biggest concern that we were warned about prior to our moving is black ice and since there are hills, that becomes an inherent concern.

Reason: clarification
I've only been staying in Lake Lure for a week, but I've experienced 2 very different weather patterns in that short period. Although I enjoy the weather in Southwest FL this time of year, by April I have to endure another 7 or 8 months of oppressive heat & humidity, so I'm not complaining.
On Sat & Sun the temperature in Rutherford County was sunny and close to 70 degrees. Perfect! What I'm noticing while watching the local news is that Asheville and Black Mountain will get some snow and slightly cooler temperatures when the temperature drops to about 35 here. I haven't seen any snow, but winter isn't over yet! (Actually, I love snow, but I am even afraid to drive on these roads when it's warm & dry.)
I am wearing 4 layers of clothing now and Dearfoam booties, and it's about 50 outside. Inside thermostat is set on 68. 2 cotton tee shirts, a sweatshirt and a wool cardigan. So my body probably needs to adjust to the difference in temperature, since I've lived in FL for so long. I'm comfortable, but my feet are always cold. Maybe I developed a condition called Florida Feet.
Being that I don't have opposable thumbs I was bearly able to hold that camera.
