It was 1 here at 8 a.m. but sun is out and gorgeous! Plan to bundle up and if I can still move take the dogs for their walk. They have sweaters for cold days think this will qualify! Must say putting in a Vermont Castings wood stove was smartest thing we've done so if the power does go out we can stay warm and cook on the top. But we are eating into the woodpile fast this month.

It doesn't stay on the ground, generally speaking. Snow falls and then melts. It's been falling and staying put this week only because of the incredibly low temperatures.

A/C- We have it and use it maybe one week out of the summer (but we're also just as likely to turn on the attic fan instead). The altitude at our house is 2295 and I'm not a transplant.

I've lived all over the country & the winters here are mild compared to other places. I grew up here & it was much colder when I was a kid then it is now. We don't use the Ac in the summers either in fact we don't have it.

I have a large thermometer on the porch and it is currently reading 18 degrees. (Lake Lure) It's 1:20 so that's probably the high for today. I went outside yesterday when the temperature reached 37, but it fell very quickly. I had to go to the post office. On the way back, I picked up a few more groceries in Ingles and it was practically deserted. I don't mind these roads when there's nobody else on them. Then I can drive in the middle. LOL

We already have way too many who take their half of the road out of the center. Be careful out there, you don't want to learn that the hard way.

Let's just not make it a habit of that!

Overall, I don't think it is colder than we thought it would be when we moved here in 2006. But we came here from the Northern Virginia suburbs of DC, so we expected it to be a bit milder in winter and noticeably so in summer. Until today, that has been largely true. Since it is the mountains, we knew there was the potential for some pockets of harsh weather.

I can understand how someone moving here from a warmer overall climate might be surprised, though.

I guess the lesson is that old adage, the number one cause of disappointment is unrealistic expectations, is true!
